Victoriana transmits from Arcalia, that a shooter is coming into town to target Cardinal Romana.

Agent Goth, a high ranking Counter Temporal Unit (CTU) officer, is alerted.

Cardinal Romana, a Time Lady running for President, writes her speech for the next day’s Prydonian primary election.

The Doctor plays chess with her companion Erin in the TARDIS. Before going to bed, she tells him that she’s glad she moved back in.

The Doctor and her husband Terry go to Erin’s room to find she has snuck out the emergency exit.

The Rani, The Doctor’s chief-of-staff at CTU, calls her into the office because Chancellor Goth is in town.

The Doctor phones Erin’s ex-boyfriend Vincent, but he doesn’t know where she is.

Erin and her friend Mintisara Alameda are on their way to meet up with some guys named Sid and Roger.

The Doctor arrives at CTU headquarters and calls her bloke to alleviate his fears. Turning back to work, The Doctor gathers her team and suggests that perhaps Cardinal Romana is the reason they have been called in. She asks them to start pulling together information on the candidate. Along with The Rani are CTU employees Rodan and Maxil.

Meanwhile, Erin and Mintisara arrive at a furniture store where they meet the guys.

The Doctor asks a friend at the LAPD to keep a lookout for her daughter. Goth arrives and briefs The Doctor’s team about an expected attempt on Romana’s life.

Goth privately tells the Doctor that there may be a leak within CTU involved in the hit.

Merklebach, a foreign photographer, calls Romana campaign manager Patiodoors from an airplane bound for Los Angeles. He is scheduled to meet Romana for breakfast the next morning. Haana, the woman in the seat next to him, overhears his conversation and asks about Romana.

The Rani confronts the Doctor about not being included in a meeting with District Director Spandrall. The Doctor does not tell her what the secrecy is about.

Terry calls to tell the Doctor that he found joints in Erin’s desk. The Doctor apologizes for not being there to help.

In a heart-to-heart talk with Roger, Erin lies and says that the Doctor is dead.

Spandrall does not reveal to the Doctor what his source is for the information on the Romana case. The Doctor is suspicious, and shoots Spandrall with a tranquilizer gun to knock him out. The Doctor orders the Rani to look up the assets of convicted heroin dealer Lancet because he has always suspected that Spandrall skimmed money from the bust. The Doctor hopes to use that information to blackmail the District Director.

Terry receives a call from Alameda, the father of Erin’s friend Mintisara. He is looking for his missing daughter.

The Doctor requests that the Rani get Maxil to access the Lancet files. Maxil is suspicious that the Rani is doing this because she is still sleeping with the Doctor. She doesn’t give a straight answer, but convinces the reluctant Maxil to get her the information.

The Doctor asks Rodan to trace the passwords for the email accounts on his home phone line. She informs Terry that Erin’s password is LIFESUCKS.

On the plane, Haana continues to grill Merklebach flirtatiously. There is growing attraction between them.

Cardinal Romana gets a phone call from Flavia at the network. She gets angry at her allegation, and avoids telling her husband Henry what was discussed.

The Rani grows worried about the Doctor’s erratic behavior, and she voices her concern that she is breaking the law by tapping into private files. She says that se will not compromise herself.

Meanwhile, Terry and Alameda decide to try to find the girls at an address found in Erin’s email account.

Seeing Terry’s repeated calls on her cell phone, Erin asks the guys to drive her back to the TARDIS.

Merklebach and Haana make love in the airplane bathroom. She asks if they can get together in Los Angeles, but he replies that he will be “pretty busy.”

At CTU, Maxil sends to the Doctor the accessed wire transfers on the Lancet account, and the Doctor wakes Spandrall. She once again asks the District Director who his source is, but this time shows the incriminating Lancet transfers. Spandrall relents.

In the air, Haana goes to the back of the plane and knocks a flight attendant unconscious. She takes out Merklebach’s stolen identification and she puts on a protective jumpsuit. She removes a bomb from the plane’s fire extinguisher and detonates it. Haana ejects herself from the cabin within seconds of the plane’s explosion, parachuting to safety.

Terry speaks to the Doctor while driving with Alameda to the Valley.

When she loses contact with her husband, the Doctor sets out to find him. Maxil stops her with news that a plane has blown up over the Mojave Desert. Preliminary reports indicate that it was bombed.

While Sid drives the van with the girls inside, he ignores Erin’s directions to her house. For the first time she is afraid, and she realizes that she may not be in control of the situation.

As Haana parachutes to safety, The Doctor’s team begins searching for the downed flight’s passenger list. When Maxil questions Spandrall’s secret visit, the Rani lies in order to protect the Doctor.

In the Mojave Desert, Haana places Merklebach’s identification card into a homing case, and buries it underground. A car picks her up. After she drives off, a motorcyclist pulls up with a tracking device. The homing case is located, and the biker digs up the ID card.

At CTU, Maxil accuses the Rani of lying to cover up what happened between Spandrall and the Doctor.

Meanwhile, Goth goes downtown to the Dunford Plaza, and secretively meets with a CTU analyst named Hedin. Although Hedin is terrified, he gives Goth a CTU key card. The magnetic strip on the card is commonly used for access into the building, but this particular one also contains a file with references to Romana, which allows the user to smuggle confidential information in and out of restricted areas. As Goth pleads for Hedin’s continued assistance, shots ring out, hitting both men. Hedin goes down. Goth is wounded but is able to shoot back at his assailant.

Goth calls the Doctor to rescue him from the assailant.

The Doctor heads downtown.

The Doctor checks in with Terry on her way to help Goth. Although Mintisara’s car is parked at the furniture store, the girls aren’t there.

In Sid’s van, Erin realizes that Mintisara has been drugged. Roger alludes that there are other “people” involved in this kidnapping.

Haana arrives at a remote desert house. Borusa hands her a briefcase full of money, and she arranges for an unknown partner to bring the ID card.

The Doctor phones the Rani for the entry code into the Dunford Plaza garage and she goes in. Maxil pulls up a call record of the Doctor and the Rani’s conversation, watching the Rani suspiciously.

In Borusa’ desert house, Haana meets Jaan, who has been transformed by plastic surgery to look like Merklebach.

The Doctor finds Goth alive. She suspects there might still be three shooters loose in the building. As they try to escape, they manage to kill two of the men. The Doctor cuts off the finger on one of the bodies to trace its prints.

The motorcyclist pulls up to Borusa’s house. It is a woman named Claire. She comes to make the handoff for Haana, but instead, gives Borusa a Polaroid photo of Merklebach’s ID. She wants more money for the ID. Borusa threatens to kill Claire, but relents when he realizes she is the only one who knows where the ID is hidden.

When Terry can’t reach The Doctor, he asks the Rani to locate the furniture store’s owner. The Rani is somewhat unsettled by the request, but agrees to help. Terry divulges to Alameda that he and The Doctor had been separated.

The Rani calls back with the owner’s phone number and Terry leaves him a message, hoping to find out more about the boys that Mintisara and Erin are with.

Romana’s children, Kamin and Namilla, return to their mother’s hotel suite from a campaign rally. Romana is diverted by a phone call from an aide named Faarl. Romana tells Faarl about Flavia ’s phone call and asks to meet him immediately.

Celestial Intervention Agency agents arrive at the hotel suite, but Romana has slipped out unnoticed. The agents warn Henry that they have evidence an attempt will soon be made on the candidate’s life.

The Doctor and Goth exit through the Dunford building’s garage, but as they head up the ramp, shots ring out and hit Goth. The Doctor fires back at the assailant. Goth shows the Doctor the key card, instructing her to give it to Rodan because she can be trusted. She will be able to link it to a CTU computer terminal to reveal who the dirty agent is. As he throws the card to the Doctor, Goth is killed by a barrage of bullets.

The Doctor escapes in her car and phones Rodan. She puts the key card into her mobile scanner, and sends her the magnetic information.

Sid pulls his van over to the side of the road and orders Erin to call Terry on the cell phone. She is to tell Terry that she is at a party and will be home in a few hours. When Erin resists, Sid is about to strike her and Roger intercedes. “Borusa said not to hurt her, remember?” Roger says. To threaten Erin, Sid smashes Mintisara’s arm with a metal bar.

Erin calls Terry’s cell phone, crying. She tries to assure Terry that she’s at a party, but ends the call by telling him that she loves him. Terry is slightly alarmed because Erin never says that.

Rodan sends to the Doctor’s car mobile messenger the name of the dirty agent using the key card. It is the Rani.

In the desert, Jaan takes target practice with a rifle.
